School Board Meeting Recap: Jan. 26, 2026

The School Board held its regular business meeting on Monday, January 26, 2026.

Meeting Highlights

  • The School Board formally adopted the Strategic Choices for a Sustainable Future plan to reduce the district’s 2026-27 operating expenses by $5 million. Approved budget reductions are outlined on our website.
  • The School Board approved and ratified the 2025-27 contracts between BPS and the Association of Bloomington Clerical, and Health Services.
  • The School Board approved its Legislative Priorities for the 2026 Legislative Session. The School Board is advocating for Minnesota lawmakers to prioritize education policy reforms to modernize testing, enact safety policies, and adopt policies that reflect current educational practices and student needs.
  • The School Board accepted a $137,500 New America Student Support grant from the Minnesota Department of Education to support students and families, particularly those from Afghanistan and Ukraine, who are new to the country. Funds will be used to hire a bilingual Afghan Cultural Liaison to collaborate with the EL Supervisor, and to pay for Dari and Pashto interpreters and translators.
  • The School Board approved a cooperative sponsorship agreement between Kennedy High School and United Christian Academy, allowing their students to participate in Kennedy boys football and boys and girls swim and dive, effective in the 2026-27 school year. The agreement addresses declining participation in these programs. Kennedy High School will remain as the host school and the teams will compete under the Kennedy Eagles name.
  • The School Board accepted a $10,000 grant from the Minnesota Vikings to support another year of Kennedy High School’s girls’ flag football program. Last spring the Bloomington Bears flag football team made it to the quarterfinals of the state tournament, finishing their inaugural season with a 10-2 record and section championship.
