The South Suburban Flyers adapted softball team won their first-ever MSHSL state championship on May 16 at Wayzata High School. The team defeated the Osseo Orioles 3-2 to claim the PI (physically impaired) title.
Two Bloomington students play on this year’s Flyers softball team: seniors Daniel Herrera Ortega (JHS) and Flyers captain Jimmy Trenary (KHS). Both were named to the PI All-Tournament team along with Flyers teammate JJ Morgan.
In order to advance to the title game, the Flyers broke the 69-game winning streak of the No. 1 seed Dakota United Hawks, becoming the first team to defeat the Hawks since 2018.
The South Suburban Jets competed in the CI (cognitively impaired) state softball tournament, playing in the quarterfinal and consolation rounds.
South Suburban includes students from Bloomington, Edina, Eden Prairie and Richfield schools.
